The Early Years
|
I was taught that although it was nice to have fun and get a little jiggy every now and then—I was also trained to believe that our lives are not our own and that we should use our talents and gifts to bless others. Early in my career, for every song I wrote about big eyes, hips, and thighs, I also wrote other songs about caring for one another and being a role model for kids. If I had thoughts about pretty women, I also challenged myself to write positive songs about respecting women and not yielding to the temptation of drugs and substance abuse. Anti-war themes, positive race and human relations, and spiritual maturity were also important topics for me. And so there you have it: From a very early age I took the intellectual, service-to-others, and social justice approach to songwriting. I chose to be a role model and a change-agent. But don’t get it twisted. I still like to “bump and grind wit a hot girl on da dance flo” (smile). I still know who to bring a crowd to their feet, and I still know how to rock the beat and make you dance until your shoes say, “enough already!”

A false polemic exists in the world, and we have not always been told the truth about our lives. We are often fooled. We have been taught to look out for number one and relentlessly pursue material gain at all costs. We have been taught to empty our brains onto the ground and ignore critical thinking. According to the myth, one race is blessed and highly favored, while others are damned for all time. One political party plays golf with God, while the other plays craps with the devil; only one group of people have made America great; there is only one standard of beauty; style and emotion are more important than personal responsibility; if something feels good to you it must be good for you; there is only one way to be Black; and children have the wherewithal to raise themselves. Buffalo chips! I don’t buy it and neither should you. Let it be made perfectly clear right here and now: We are all guilty to one degree or another, and we all could do more to prepare a better future for our children. Warning: If we don’t set self aside and stop all of this unnecessary partisan bickering and nonsensical arguing over small stuff, God just might decide to withdraw His hand of protection and blessing from our nation. If that ever happens, we will be some sorry ass sons of bitches and it will be our own fault. No, I may not be the best singer nor the strongest songwriter in the business. And yes, I may be a little boring and old-fashion, but at least I am not sleep walking!

No Man is an Island
|
An old school view of romance: Love is in the air. It is on the ground, in the clouds, it is everywhere. Grab your favorite girl and pull her in close. Slowly run your hands up and down her thighs. Throw in an extra bump—a memory she won’t soon forget. Whisper sweet nothings in her ear and say all the magic words that will send her over the moon. Now, place your hand where there is pulsation. Slowly massage that area, and then keep your hand locked at that spot. Capture it like a photographic moment. When you lean in close for a kiss, do it in slow motion so that it feels like a cinematic moment. Gently bite her bottom lip, then suck on it. Make her shiver at the thought of wanting seconds and thirds. Make her pine for you when you’re away. Love can be like a stranger on a skateboard. Sometimes you pull off the greatest stunt ever witnessed, and other times you spin out and crash really hard. When love goes astray it can hurt like hell, especially when they leave. But when it is done right, it is tight. It can be epic and transformative. Love can heal, and love can hurt. It can move, and it can remove. The way to keep her is to make her first in your life. Be her knight in shining armor that she cannot do without. It also helps if you learn how to become her stress reliever—someone that brings sanity to her chaotic world.

The Cornhusker Kid |
Sooner Magic my ass (smile). I refuse to believe that the Oklahoma Sooners football team has some kind of mystical stranglehold over the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Not only that, but I also believe the Wisconsin Badgers, Iowa Hawkeyes, Ohio Buckeyes, Michigan Wolverines, and the Colorado Buffaloes are football frauds. [Important sidenote: Is it just me or does Bucky the Badger need plastic surgery? Does the Nittany Lion need more meat on its scrawny bones? Do buffalo burgers taste better with or without steak sauce?]. Yes, these are good teams that win the important games, but some of it is luck, and all of it is only for the temporary time being. Change is in the air, and a new Cornhusker dynasty is just right around the corner. Buckle up your chin strap boys, because Herbie Husker is about to introduce you to a forearm shiver that will make you quiver in your boots. The rise of the Husker steamroller is real and eminent. And when it happens, it’s gonna be legendary!
